Medicaid Alabama September 16th, 2009Medicaid Alabama provides programs for elderly, disabled, children, families and pregnant women in need of medical services. Alabama is similar to other states in that they receive federal funds in order to serve these different populations.
There are four different agencies in Alabama that can determine whether a person is eligible for Medicaid Alabama, and so depending on the particular individual or families needs or situation they may look to these different agencies in Alabama to assist them in determining eligibility:
- The Alabama Department of Human Resources determines eligibility for foster children and children that receive adoption assistance
- The Alabama Catholic Social Services Agency determines eligibility for refugees involved in the Refugee Resettlement Program
- The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines eligibility for recipients of SSI such as the aged, blind or disabled.
- The Alabama Medicaid Agency determines eligibility for participants in the following programs- Breast and Cervical Cancer Program, Emergency Services for Aliens, Elderly and Disabled Programs, Medicaid for Low Income Families (MLIF), (SOBRA) program, Plan First (Family Planning) Program.
Once you have determined which agency that you should apply to for Medicaid Alabama , you will need to fill out an application. Here are the different populations that are eligible for Medicaid in Alabama:
Families who are eligible for AFDC based upon income
Recipients of Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
Babies of that are born to mothers who are Medicaid-eligible pregnant women;
Children who are under the age of 6 whose family income is at or below
133 percent of the federal poverty level
Children ages 6-18 whose family income is up to 100 percent of the federal poverty level
Those receiving adoption assistance
Foster care children
Those receiving Medicare benefits
In order to qualify for Medicaid Alabama you must
- Live in Alabama
- Be in the U.S. legally or be a citizen
- Meet the income requirements as well as the age requirements for the particular Alabama Medicaid Programs
- In some cases you must meet medical criteria
- Pregnant mothers must be medically certified
There are certain income and resources requirements that a person or family must meet to receive benefits and there a maximum amounts of income that an individual or a family be allowed to have in order to qualify.
The Medicaid worker will need to verify income and resources when a person applies for Medicaid.
